The 3day.
I survived the 3day in the Texas heat! Mom walked all 60 miles, I am so proud of her. Being on the Gear and Tent Crew was a real challenge, but the experience was so rewarding.
Oh, and I even managed to lock myself in a porta-poty on Friday. Go me.
Thursday night I went to my aunt's house after Crew day, my parents arrived and we all went out to dinner at Olive Garden. My aunt then treated all of us to chair massages by a bunch of crazy Chinese guys at Vista Ridge mall. I haven't had a massage in a long time, it was fabulous.
Friday we were at Ameriquest Field at 4am. Each day our crew had a theme and Friday's was pajamas since we had to be up so early. I showed up in pajama shorts with curlers in my hair. It was our job on the crew to look silly and inspire the walkers. The Gear and Tent Crew did such a good job at inspiring the walkers that we won the "Most Spirited Crew" award. Pretty neat! Camp One was located at North Lake College and we arrived there around 9. The tents were split into two sides, we unpacked the first side, ate lunch (at 10:30!) and did the other side. After we had finished unpacking we sat around until the walkers started arriving then we got to help them find their luggage, tents and camp sites. I had already set up Mom and Susan's tent before they got there and I was able to sit at the welcome station and welcome mom as she came across the finish line. When we were unloading and setting up Crew camp, I went to find out where my site was and found that my tent mate had already put up our tent and put her stuff inside, but when I came back later to get my stuff to shower, her stuff was gone so I ended up with the place to myself. Around 11:15 that night I was woken up by the voices of my neighbor and raindrops falling on my face. I crawled out of my tent and put the rain fly on, I thought I was going to hurt myself because I didn't have my glasses and couldn't see anything. It rained, thundered and lightning off and on all night, but the ground wasn't terribly soaked and it wasn't too humid on Saturday.
After we had unloaded the trucks at Camp Two on Saturday, I was laying on top of some bags by Truck E taking a nap when I was rudely awakened by someone sitting on me. I had no clue who it could be. Then I opened my eyes and it was lil' brudder shaking me saying "Katy Katy! Let's go see what Santa brought us!" A trick I used to pull on him all the time. I went with him and Dad to the cheering station to cheer on the walkers and see mom. I made it back to ice down my leg and be at the welcome station to see mom as she came in. That night the G&T Crew decided to set up our tents by our trucks instead of at Crew Camp with was a long way away. Our job was right there with the walkers so it was best for us to be there if they needed us. I slept straight through the night, despite the inconveniently located lump in the middle of my tent.
Today we didn't leave camp until 9:30. We got to sit at Camp Two for a long time, hanging out and watching the staff take down the big tents. Michael, Ken, Jamie and I stopped at a 7-11 on our way downtown and I got a slurpie! The directions we were given on where to go downtown were wrong and we ended up in the Load-Out area inside the Convention Center instead of on the South side of City Hall. We found our way to where we needed to be and unloaded half the trucks before lunch. When we got started on the last half, some volunteers showed up to help us. Mom called to tell me that she was about a mile and a half away from the Convention Center so I went down to the welcome station to wait for her with my aunt and the other "You Go Girls" team members. When she finished, there were tears and we went upstairs to get our victory (long sleeved) t-shrits and to cheer on the other walkers as they came in. The closing ceremonies were at 4:30 and I was sweating like no other in that long sleeved shirt, but it was incredible to see all the survivors and the walkers and to feel their love for the Crew. We worked hard for them, and I was happy to help in any way I could.
I was "The Navigator" on Truck "I" and I had two team members: David and Michael. David is one of /those/ people. Obsessed with Star Wars/Star Trek/Medieval Reenactment etc, and he is even more literal than Tim (if that is possible). He was dressed as a Jedi on Friday and today, and in a kilt yesterday. I really didn't want to know what was under that thing... And I wanted to slap him a couple of times. Michael was totally amazing. He gave 110%. If something needed to be done, he did it. He was lots of fun and really made my weekend fly by.
My body has gotten used to this getting up at 4:30 and going to bed at 8:30 thing. I'm sore and tired. My runner's knee decided to act up yesterday, I think the heat from the friction of my movement combined with the weather triggered it. But over all, it was everything I expected it to be.
Tomorrow is going to be awesome, relaxing and very girlie.
